Rome, what can one say about the eternal city that has not already been said. Rome was an interesting experience, initially I was underwhelmed but the city grows on you until you love the place. Admittedly our stay was only in the tourist areas but they are very impressive. If you have an interest in ancient history allow lots of time for the Colosseum and Forum area. We only had a day, the Forum alone is a day. Outside the Forum area we walked from tourist site to tourist site, a great way to see the place and soak up the atmosphere. Give yourself plenty of time, take a break and have a coffee, stop at a lovely little cafe for some lunch. If nothing else the city oozes atmosphere.
